Life With: Daniel Civetta
Life With: Daniel Civetta
From managing boutique hotel Numeroventi to taking pictures, Italian Daniel Civetta is a man of many talents. We have recently had a chat with Daniel, which has resulted in this interview where we will get to know more about where he gets his inspiration from for both his job and personal style, what art forms he finds inspiring, and how he arrived at his different work fields.
ANOTHER ASPECT:
Your work varies from managing a boutique hotel to taking pictures. How did you arrive at these fields?
Daniel Civetta:
It’s safe to say that photography has been there since the first day. Having the majority of my father’s side of the family in the field, it passed on quite fluidly. Funnily enough, it’s purely what brought me to Numeroventi when I first moved to Florence. I believe it was my second year in Italy when I had an exhibition at a gallery, to which I had the pleasure of meeting Martino; the founder of Numeroventi. It’s an inspiring fulcrum for many, including myself, which allowed me to work on both things.
ANOTHER ASPECT:
How did you develop your style as a photographer?
Daniel Civetta:
I like to believe I’ve always been more of a listener than a talker; perhaps this trait of mine has been present in my work. Moving to Italy had an impact on my photography. I still like to joke around that one of the apartments I picked out a few years ago had the same lighting as a Caravaggio painting, which strongly influenced my work. Whether it’s a portrait of someone or photographing a vase on a table, they both have the same importance and fragility I like to depict.
ANOTHER ASPECT:
What other art forms do you find inspiration in?
Daniel Civetta:
Cooking has been a big part of my younger self and somewhat an escape. Not only by allowing me to reconnect with a garden I’ve neglected or ingredients from my childhood but also flourish my thoughts and creativity on a plate. In addition, working at Numeroventi taught me a lot about interiors, which allowed me to enter a space with a fixed connotation of how I’d like to depict it and add another form of art if you’d like.
ANOTHER ASPECT:
You helped run Numeroventi in Florence. What is the idea behind the residency?
Daniel Civetta:
As I’ve said previously, Numeroventi has become an inspiring and cultivating fulcrum for many, including myself. I happened to focus on the Boutique Hotel aspect; however, it allowed the same time creatives from all over the world to work and connect and bring life to a building that has seen it all for the past 500 years by hosting curated exhibitions, dinners, and much more. So while taking care of the space and residents, it is no doubt that it has always been reciprocal.

ANOTHER ASPECT:
What garment is essential to you?
Daniel Civetta:
A chore jacket. I leave the house with more things than needed, and the pockets from my pants are never enough. Apart from that, I love the simplicity and structure of a well-made chore jacket, plus you can wear them all year round.
ANOTHER ASPECT:
Who and what do you look towards for style inspiration?
Daniel Civetta:
I've always enjoyed simple garments, nothing loud. A mix of British menswear with the older cuts and garments from Italy could work well to define what I wear. Do you know Kennedy's photographs on a sailing boat in a blue sweater? That's it.
