ANOTHER ASPECT:

Your work finds itself between art, music and journalism. How did you arrive at these fields?

CB:

I’ve always had a broad interest in the arts and see them as interconnected. Both on a superficial level: cues, visual references, as well as theory and history that crosses over. There’s a borrowed language between the arts and an overarching trend of discovery – finding things that might have been overlooked, yet still relevant.

ANOTHER ASPECT:

With your project Fourth Sounds, you combine music and art — what do you find these disciplines have in common and how can music alter our experience of art?

CB:

I think fundamentally they’re similar; good art or music should affect its subject, however the way they operate is different. Music is visceral, whilst art can take time to appreciate. When experienced together, music can provide a point of entry or add a layer of complexity to a work.

ANOTHER ASPECT:

How has your perspective on the conventional art world evolved since you began working with art?

CB:

I didn’t take the traditional route into the arts and came into it with my own ideas so there’s been a shift in my perspective over the past 8 or 9 years. Recently digital platforms have offered new ways of discovering and experiencing art, which is exciting!

ANOTHER ASPECT:

What does art bring to your life and what are you hoping that it will provide for others?

CB:

New mindsets and worldviews.

ANOTHER ASPECT:

Moving on to your writing, given that nearly everyone now has a platform to express themselves through social media, what does it mean to you to be a journalist today?

CB:

It’s a challenge, there’s so much content and so many opinions out there. Journalism is really just a term I’ve used to categorise my interviews, studio visits and short essays. It’s also a place for my photography, which usually has a reportage element. It started with a passion for a subject and continued through my belief in storytelling: both short and long form, combined with photographs.

ANOTHER ASPECT:

What garment is essential to you?

CB:

A shirt. I wear one almost every day, there are so many possibilities in the cut, cloth and details.

ANOTHER ASPECT:

Who and what do you look towards for style inspiration?

CB:

Over the last few years I’ve taken an interest in the history of clothing, I’ve interviewed interesting figures in menswear, and currently work with some exciting brands. The people that inspire me understand the importance of culture and craftsmanship, they’ve often developed their own style and are just as ease wearing casual clothes as dressing up.
