Life With: Gianluca and Daniele (Bergianti Vino)

Our friends from Studio Mare spent a day at the Terrevive farm in the village of Gargallo di Carpi near Modena. Here they got the chance to talk to Gianluca and Daniele about their job, routines and their wine Bergianti Vino.

ANOTHER ASPECT:

What was the first approach with biodynamic agriculture and why did you decide to take this path?

GIANLUCA:

The first approach to biodynamic agriculture was thanks to my wife. When we took the farm we found abandoned lands, for this reason we have revitalized the soils and improved the fertility. Biodynamic agriculture responded to our needs immediately, following our sensibility, our lands, always looking for a product that was the most dynamic as much as possible.

DANIELE:

The first approach was when I met Gianluca and Simona, the choice to start was born spontaneously. Biodynamic agriculture is the only way that I know to take care of my soils, a common heritage of all.

ANOTHER ASPECT:

What brought you to do this job?

G:

Working in the fields it’s therapeutic for me. Living with natural rhythms surrounded by an agricultural world, this is the only way to stay always focused.

D:

My work is able to give me a beautiful sense of serenity. I can feel every little seasonal change, really enjoying it all. The first time that I entered the vineyard I fell in love, it was definitely love at the first sight. I realized that Terrevive was my home.

ANOTHER ASPECT:

Which features must a good wine have for you?

G:

A good wine must be an expression of a territory, must look like a food, in the specific case of the Lambrusco must express joy and conviviality.

D:

A good wine must have something to say, it must be honest, frank, thirst quenching, nutrient, healthy, pure, and alive.

ANOTHER ASPECT:

What is your daily routine in the farm?

G:

I usually wake up at 6:00 am, make breakfast for all the family and then take a walk with the dog. After that, at 8:30 am, I meet the guys of the farm and we set the daily schedule. Then I go to pick up the little Tea at the kindergarten, into the woods, near the farm.

At 01:00 pm we have lunch all together. The afternoon schedule depends on the season.

During winter, I work as long as there is light, whereas in summer I work until late avoiding the hottest hours of the day.

At the end of the day, after work, I take another walk with my dog, have dinner with the family and a good wine. We usually go to sleep at 9.30 pm.

D:

My daily routine changes depending on the season, usually starts at dawn and ends at sunset. During this period of the year (winter) I taste the wine that is inside the vats to check that everything works correctly. We’ll start with pruning shortly, my favorite moment of the year. That means silence, quiet and fog.

ANOTHER ASPECT:

What are your passions in addition to the wine?

G:

I like to play tennis and go sailing. I try to play once a week, when it's possible. I’m lucky because my father in law has a boat in Viareggio and sometimes we do some daily trips.

D:

When I have some energy left, during the week after the farm work, I go to the gym to do rock climbing or boulder. When I have more free time I like to go to the Appennini (Italian mountains) with my friends. Film photography is my other great passion. The film developed in the darkroom is a magic of which I think I never get tired of.

ANOTHER ASPECT:

Do you listen to music while working, if so which kind of music?

G:

I always listen to music, from Radiohead to Pearl Jam, Moby and Bon Iver, I also sometimes listen to classical music while working in winery.

D:

I always listen to music all day, both in the fields and in the winery. The kind of music changes according to the mood of the day, it can range from Electro to italian classics.

ANOTHER ASPECT:

What is your first memory related to the wine?

G:

My paternal great grandfather gave me my first sip of wine when I was five. I remember when he bottled the wine for all condos and he always wanted me to do this with him. I was eight.

D:

When I was kid, my maternal grandmother used to give me a finger of wine with water during the festive lunches. For her, I too had the right to toast like everyone else.

ANOTHER ASPECT:

Do you think that what you wear is important to your daily routine?

G:

It's fundamental. It’s not easy to find the right outfit for our job, it must be comfy, technical, and why not also nice.

D:

Sure, my clothes reflect who I am. The way we look is the first way of communicating with people, before discovering what we are inside. A little bit like a bottle of wine!
